How to Match Hair Extension Color Perfectly

How to Match Hair Extension Color Perfectly

Color mismatch is the most common reason extensions look fake. Use this simple guide to find your perfect shade every time.

The most common reason extensions look unnatural isn't the hair quality — it's the color. A perfect match makes extensions undetectable; a close-but-not-quite match ruins the effect. Here's how to get it right.

Understand the numbering system. Hair colors are numbered from 1 (jet black) to 10 (lightest blonde), with letters describing tone: B for ash, R for red, G for gold, and so on. A shade like 4B is a dark ash brown — cool-toned; 4G would be warm-toned dark brown.

Match to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, not the roots. Your roots are often 1–2 shades darker than the rest of your hair. For the most natural blend, choose extensions that match your ends — that's where the extensions will sit alongside your natural hair.

Consider your undertone. Hold the extension against your hair in natural daylight, not under shop lighting, and check it from all angles. If you can't decide between two shades, go half a shade lighter — extensions that are slightly lighter blend more naturally than ones that are too dark.

When in doubt, order our color ring. Our color ring shows all available shades in real hair, so you can compare tones side by side under daylight. And if you're still unsure, send us a photo of your hair in natural light — our team will match your shade for free.
