Tape-In, Pre-Bonded, Weft or Clip-In? How to Choose

Tape-In, Pre-Bonded, Weft or Clip-In? How to Choose

Each installation method suits different hair types and lifestyles. We break down the pros and cons so you can pick the perfect set.

Choosing the right hair extension method comes down to three things: your natural hair type, your lifestyle, and how long you want to commit to a style. Here's a practical guide to the four main methods.

Tape-in extensions are ideal for fine to medium hair. Thin, flat wefts are applied with medical-grade adhesive tape, lying completely flat against the scalp. They are invisible, lightweight and reusable — a full set can be reinstalled 2–3 times. Expect to have them moved up every 6–8 weeks as your hair grows.

Pre-bonded extensions — I-tip, U-tip, V-tip and nano/micro ring — use small keratin bonds or metal rings to attach individual strands. These offer the most natural movement and are perfect for medium to thick hair. Nano ring extensions, in particular, use no heat and no glue, making them one of the gentlest methods available. They need maintenance every 8–10 weeks.

Weft extensions come in machine, hand-tied and butterfly varieties. A weft is a long strip of hair sewn or taped into a braid or track. Hand-tied wefts are the lightest and flattest, ideal for fine hair; machine wefts are the most affordable and durable, great for medium to thick hair. Wefts are a favorite for full-volume transformations.

Clip-in extensions are the perfect starting point. They take 10 minutes to apply at home, need no heat, glue or salon visit, and can be removed instantly. Great for events, experimenting with length, or for anyone who wants flexibility without commitment.

Still unsure? Consider your daily routine — if you swim, exercise or wear your hair up often, methods like tape-in or nano ring hold up better than clip-ins. If you have very fine or fragile hair, hand-tied wefts or nano rings are gentler on your natural strands. When in doubt, send us a photo of your hair and our team will recommend the best method for you.
